Meet the Chairman

John Brady is married with two grown up children and has spent most of his career travelling around the world working as a management consultant. He has lived in London for much of his life and in his spare time enjoys karate.

“I first heard about Brogdale when I met Bryan Mills at a party in London, and I was intrigued when a box of apples appeared at my home a few weeks later. I was further enthused when I came to visit the farm. A site tour from Ted Hobday captivated me, and the commitment of Jeff, the farm manager, and Jane, the Chief Executive, convinced me that Brogdale was a trust worth supporting.

The whole idea of maintaining and preserving the National Fruit Collection struck me as a wonderful concept. However the main reason why the Trust really appealed to me is my love of fruit and particularly apples. I far prefer British apples to foreign varieties, my favourite apple being Alkmene. Throughout my life when I dine out in a restaurant I always decline the listed desserts and ask for an apple.

As a small charity life can be a bit hand to mouth at Brogdale but it’s reputation goes far and wide. All the people who support the trust, staff, trustees and friends alike, show great commitment and give so freely of their time. Thanks to their efforts the Trust is now in the best shape it has been for a long time. However the best is surely to come, for concerns about health and a desire for authenticity mean that British fruit has a great future.

I hope now to do everything I can to secure the future of the National Fruit Collection and the Brogdale Horticultural Trust.”
